Frank, enjoyed the article immensely, you hit upon some great points that were presented in plain English that everyone could use as takeaways. If you want to make your mark, try and do the things that will help stack the deck in your favor.

As always Frank, you knocked it out of the park. NOW I have to erase an entire damn chapter in my upcoming book on the toils of the job. One thing I might add with reltion to the section where you emphasize not asking why the team does things a certain way. In that same vain-DO NOT start running your mouth about how you did it on the wing bang dang peninsula with XYZ company. No one wants to hear about that especially when you are new. If you are trying to find new friends and building cliques let me say this-the plane, bus, car and cab drives back the other direction very easily and quick.

Too often FNG's have a sense of thinking that just because you've been selected on the team you are good to go. But in fact all you are is that someone thought you were "good to start".

Tony, I enjoyed reading your article, pun intended, as this is something I have observed in professional and private experiences. I sometimes take calls, and listen in on calls that come with questions on the courses we offer. Here is a synopsis: Caller: yes i am calling with questions regarding the NYS 8 Hour Pre-assignment Course, Me: How may I help? Caller: Well I was wondering when you are holding this class, Me: Our next class is June 18th, Caller: Could you tell me how much the course is?, Me: Yes I can, but have you visited our website? Caller: I am on the website now. Me: Do you see where it says schedule? and Registration? Caller: Yes, Me: OK, well the answers to all your questions you have asked are right on the web page!

My personal observation is that individuals are looking for immediate satisfaction, and any delay in obtaining satisfaction or gratification is not acceptable. This could be something as simple as reading, or something more in depth...such as an individual I recall stating on a web board, "well I said that I would give this bodyguard business two years to be successful and time is up", he went on to say he was broke and was not supporting his family. Aside from poor planning in not maintaining a job with income, I feel this individual was looking for immediate satisfaction and did not want to obtain the time and grade often required with a profession.

I have always admired a good friend of mine, he is a Veterinary Doctor who has been very successful and who needs not work at all, but when his family made a move to South Carolina, at the age of 68, he took a job with the local market bagging groceries until his licensing came through. At the time we all thought, "is Doc nuts?", but what I learned is he was committed. I tell people that even for someone such as my self, narrowing in on 30 years in the protection field, it takes a daily investment. Not just monetary investment, but an investment of yourself through time and sacrifice. Interesting enough, two of the individuals you mentioned, Larry and Elijah, recently did an audio interview, my granddaughter enjoyed listening to this interview as I rocked her in the chair and listened to the complete interview. I am not sure if she will pursue a career in EP or not but it did provide me with more insight and opened me to new information and provided a smile about about some of the things I shared in experience.

Skills, experience, location, luck and networking may all be part of it, but to me you are setting yourself up for failure when you expect immediate satisfaction. Prepare for the long haul and stay committed to what you set out to do. Well enough hot air from me, my alarm just went off to remind me that I need to head out to the licensing office for an exam, wait, did I really say an exam?

I have always tried to have as much realistic stress, and scenarios encompassed in the training module as possible.
This was another example where excellent training prevailed.

Thanks Tony for relating the article
