Everyone is telling us not to use the cell phone while driving, but what I found surprising was; using a handheld cell phone while driving is not illegal in most states. See more information on the laws in each state.
As a Security Driver or EP person you already know that using a hands free headset is a smart move both on a professional and personal level.
I came across a product released in January of this year, the Jabra BT8040 that has some fantastic new features. The big news from a non security view is that it can stream music wirelessly. However there are a few other features that a Security Driver may find appealing and useful.
The first is volume equalization – This feature will keep all calls that come in at the volume you set.
Acoustic shock protection – Protects your ear from sudden changes in volume. This will be useful for when you get those phone calls from someone who thinks your cell number is a fax machine number, and you get that loud screech in your ear.
Noise reduction – It will reduce background noise so both you and the caller will sound clearer. This is the technology that has made Bose music headphones famous.
This next feature is my favorite. You can connect to two phones simultaneously. If you keep your personal and work device separate this headset will work with both at the same time, so no more juggling phones. And if you happen to have 8 different devices you can pair this headset with each one.
The Jabra BT8040 also has the standard features that come on most devices such as voice command support, muting, and call hold/wait support. The talk time is 6 hours and 200 hours on stand by.
It is lightweight and very professional looking, weighs in at approximately 10 grams and is 2.54 inches long by .71 inches wide. The headset is black with two small silver strips that go around the border.
The one feature that could be the downfall is the ear tip. It is made of a gel like substance that goes directly in your ear. Some may find it comfortable and secure while others may not. The absence of a hook that goes over your ear might not be ideal for the security professional. It really comes down to personal preference. However it does come with 3 different gel tips and a hoop that helps keep it in place so you can find one that fits best to your ear.
In total I think it is worth looking into. The noise reduction, shock protection and volume controls are wonderful features to have while driving. The paring of the two device simultaneously can make your life easier as well. Don’t forget it does stream music wirelessly. So if you are off duty and like to listen to a little music you can.
