Miscellaneous Ramblings of an Old Man – Part Six

I am approaching the 12th year of “The Miscellaneous Ramblings of an Old Man.” I started the Ramblings when I was a young 72. I stopped writing them in 2017.

The “Ramblings” are, as the title would suggest, the random thoughts that enter the mind of an old guy. Mostly one-liners that cover life in general and any other fleeting thoughts that manage to navigate my diminishing mental faculties.

The Ramblings took on a life of their own, receiving many views and comments. Some of the comments provoked “lively” discussions.

This post is a collection of past “Ramblings.”

  • A quote from Theoretical physicist Steve Hawkings – “The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance; it is the illusion of knowledge.”
  • Have you noticed that when a conversation starts with- “with all due respect,” it tends to go downhill from there?
  • I’m curious – when is old enough to know better supposed to kick in – I don’t think I’m there yet.
  • I have been in the profession for decades, and every time I think I have seen or heard the dumbest thing I have ever seen or heard, someone proves me wrong.
  • Don’t assume malice for what stupidity can explain.
  • Patience is inversely proportional to age.
  • My ability to remember song lyrics from the ’50s and ’60s far exceeds my ability to remember why I walked into the kitchen.
  • Experience is something you don’t get until just after you need it.
  • If you want the rainbow, you must endure the rain.
  • “Indignation,” Marshall McLuhan once said, “endows the idiot with dignity.”
  • Don’t mistake intelligence for knowledge. I have met many people with more degrees than a thermometer but zero common sense.
  • Facebook – The place where many have answers to questions that no one has asked.
  • If you want a career, I suggest taking advice from those with one, and posting on Facebook is not a career.
  • I worked into my late 70s and was asked why you are still working at that age. The answer is simple – because it’s not work – it’s fun. If you feel that what you do every day is work, I suggest changing your profession.
  • When it comes to training – don’t mistake adrenaline/entertainment for education.
  • I am a fan of the Tom Clancy books; years back, when I read “Threat Vector,” I came to the conclusion that we need Jack Ryan as president.
  • Speaking of politics, it would be a novelty to have this country’s fiscal policy managed by someone who has been compelled to earn a living.
  • It would be great if those who make the laws concerning health care actually had to abide by them.
  • Teach a man to fish, and he will eat for life – give him someone else’s fish, and he will vote for you.
  • While you only live once, I can confirm that once is enough if you work it right.
  • I’m so old that I remember when Executive Protection meant protecting executives – WOW.
  • Instead of making a better planet for our children – How about we make better children for our planet?
  • If you think that as you get older, there is nothing left to learn the hard way -you are wrong.
  • I may have to get old, but I never have to grow up.
  • Facebook has convinced me more than ever that George Bernard Shaw was correct: “Youth is wasted on the young.”
  • The new overused word in the industry is networking – keep in mind that Networking and Socializing are not the same. Networking requires that people who offer job opportunities be present.
